Be Subject For the Lord's Sake

Overview

Overview

Apostle Peter’s emphasis is for the whole church to live rightly. And it is first seen in the way we submit ourselves to the authorities over us:

1. PRINCIPLE

We submit to our government not because of their performance (though that will make it easier!), but because of their position. Whilst we should not obey if they call us to sin, we are called to obey even unjust rulers.

2. PURPOSE

We subject so that we may shine that godly beautiful life of biblical submission. Peter is singular in his motivation here. It is about God’s glory.

3. PARADOX

Whilst we are free in the gospel, we are to make ourselves slaves for God. So we honour all, including the emperor.

Pastor Jason from Gospel Light Christian Church discusses the importance of biblical submission in 1 Peter 2, emphasizing that Christians should live righteously and maintain good conduct even under persecution. He uses the Titanic musicians as an example of courage under fire. Submission is not about weakness but strength, and it applies to all authorities, including unjust ones. The purpose of submission is to silence the ignorance of unbelievers and proclaim God’s excellencies through holy living. Pastor Jason stresses that submission should be done with respect and honor, and it is crucial for the church to live out its faith in a way that attracts others to salvation.

• Pastor Jason begins by discussing the Titanic disaster and the courage of the musicians who played until the end.
• He draws a parallel between the musicians’ courage and the courage required of Christians under persecution.
• Pastor Jason emphasizes that Christians are called to live out their faith through holy living, not just through preaching.
