Instead of being angry and living in sin because of the pains of trials, the people of God should exude righteousness.

But what does this righteous life look like? How can you and I practically do it? And why does this matter at all?

James teaches about living in righteousness in trials here.

A true Christian is evidenced by obedience to God’s Word even through trials, producing righteousness rather than anger & sin. Therefore, he forsakes anger and sin. Instead, he pursues righteousness in speech, in service & in sanctification:

James provides an example of the man in the mirror. He who sees and changes what he sees (his anger and sinful life) is wise and will be blessed. He who sees and does nothing about it (continues in anger and sin) is foolish and will not save his soul.

3. Implications

True and False religion is not evidenced by mere profession, but by demonstration. The true Christian bridles his tongue, serves the poor & needy, and lives unstained in the world.

In trials, let us not be tempted by our own desires, but humbly receive God’s Word and live our persevering obedience, for that is the way to save our soul and inherit the crown and life. This is religion pure and undefiled.
