Overview

Overview

We embark on a 20 week journey through the book of 1 Peter today.

1. THE AUTHOR.

Peter was a most colourful character in the Bible. And he was also an apostle, probably the most prominent amongst the original 12. And so what we will read is deeply interesting.

2. THE AUDIENCE.

This letter was written to the elect (both Jews and Gentiles) in Asia Minor of ancient Rome (modern day Turkey). They were scattered and were subject to harassment, hostility and persecution. And that is the reason for the letter- to urge the believers to live in holiness in the midst of hostility.

3. THE AFFIRMATION.

Instead of moping, moaning and groaning, Peter reminds his readers about their blessings in the gospel. He speaks of the Father’s sovereign election, the Spirit’s sanctifying work in their hearts, and the cleansing by the blood of Jesus. He also speaks of the grace and peace multiplied to God’s people.

So, instead of a superficial “things will always get better soon”, or a superficial “God is here for your comfort”, let us learn the profound goal of “holiness in hostility”. Jesus came not to live it up, but to give his life up for God’s glory. May we follow Him.

Pastor Jason discusses the authorship and significance of the Book of First Peter, highlighting Peter’s credentials as an apostle and his role in the early church. He explains that Peter writes to “elect exiles” in various regions of Asia Minor, likely including both Jews and Gentiles. The theme of the book is “holiness in hostility,” emphasizing the elect’s call to live holy lives amidst persecution. Pastor Jason underscores the importance of recognizing one’s blessings, the work of the Holy Spirit in sanctification, and the need for ongoing obedience to Christ. He encourages believers to persevere in faith, drawing strength from the Holy Spirit and the example of Jesus.

Introduction to the Book of First Peter

• Pastor Jason begins by comparing famous books like “Lord of the Rings” and “Harry Potter” to the Book of First Peter, emphasizing its significance due to its author.
• Pastor Jason introduces the author, Peter, highlighting his background as a fisherman, disciple of Jesus, and witness to miracles like walking on water and the Transfiguration.
• Peter’s rash actions, such as chopping off Malchus’ ear and denying Jesus three times, are mentioned to provide context for his character.

Peter’s Authority and Role in the Early Church

• Pastor Jason explains that Peter calls himself an apostle of Jesus Christ, emphasizing his credentials and the weight of his words.
• The term “apostle” is defined as a delegate or messenger sent by Jesus, who witnessed His resurrection and led the early church.
• Peter’s prominence among the apostles is noted, with his name appearing first in lists of apostles and his role in preaching the first message on Pentecost.
• Peter’s ministry is credited with opening the doors of the Gospel to Jews, Samaritans, and Gentiles, as detailed in Acts chapters 2, 8, and 10.

The Audience of First Peter

• Pastor Jason identifies the audience of First Peter as those who are elect exiles of the dispersion in various regions of Asia Minor.
• The term “dispersion” is explained as a reference to the historical event of Jewish exile by the Babylonians in 586 BC.
• Scholars debate whether the letter is only for Jews or also for Gentiles, with evidence from verses like 1 Peter 2:10 and 4:3 suggesting inclusivity.
• The audience is described as Christians living as exiles in these regions, facing persecution and hostility from non-Christians.

The Theme of Holiness in Hostility

• Pastor Jason introduces the overall theme of the book of First Peter: holiness in hostility.
• The elect exiles are called to live holy lives, abstaining from the lust of the flesh and submitting to authorities.
• The book emphasizes the importance of using gifts and talents to serve God and steward the gifts given by Him.
• The theme is rooted in the idea that Christians are elect by God and should expect hostility from a world that does not love God.

Peter’s Affirmation of the Audience’s Blessings

• Pastor Jason highlights Peter’s affirmation of the audience’s blessings, reminding them of their election and the privileges they have as believers.
• The concept of foreknowledge is explained as God’s love and choice of the elect before time, not based on merit but on His mercy.
• The Holy Spirit’s role in sanctifying believers and bringing them to spiritual life is emphasized, with a focus on the initial act of believing in Jesus and the ongoing obedience to His teachings.
• The idea of being sprinkled with Christ’s blood is discussed as a symbol of cleansing and ongoing holiness.

The Work of the Trinity in the Lives of Believers

• Pastor Jason explains that the work of the Trinity is central to the blessings and sanctification of believers.
• The Father chooses the elect, the Spirit sanctifies them, and the Son provides the blood for cleansing.
• The importance of recognizing and appreciating these blessings, even in the face of suffering, is emphasized.
• The analogy of a game played during Chinese New Year is used to illustrate the unexpected and undeserved nature of God’s blessings.

The Challenge of Living Holy Lives in a Hostile World

• Pastor Jason encourages the audience to live holy lives in a hostile world, drawing parallels to the story of Punch the monkey.
• The resilience and mental strength of Punch are used to illustrate the strength and holiness believers can demonstrate in their lives.
• The importance of setting correct expectations and recognizing the blessings of being chosen by God is reiterated.
• The sermon concludes with a call to remember Jesus’ suffering and sacrifice, and to follow Him in living holy lives despite the challenges and hostility they may face.
