Blessings Of The New Birth

[1 Peter 1:3-9]

Episodes from : Pastor Jason Lim

Overview

Overview

These verses reveal more fully how God blesses us in the:

1. PAST

God caused us to be born again to a living hope. God gave us the ability to “see” the future glories of His inheritance. And in this we can rejoice, even in suffering.

 2. PRESENT

God’s power guards us through faith, enabling us to endure to the end. Even amid suffering, we rejoice in the sure hope to come—this is the supernatural power of God’s gift of faith.

3. PROSPECT

God uses our faithful endurance to bring Him glory, and His gift of faith, love, and hope will one day result in praise and honour to Him. Peter offers no shallow promises, but points us to the gospel—where even amid trials, we rejoice in the sure hope of salvation and keep our eyes on the prize.

Transcript

Pastor Jason discusses the concept of being “born again” and the blessings it brings, emphasizing that spiritual life is a gift from God, not something earned. He explains that being born again is a living hope, a confident expectation of future blessings, and a motivation to live holy lives despite hostility. Jason references Peter’s letter, highlighting the importance of faith in enduring trials and the eternal security of believers. He uses the analogy of gold refining to illustrate the purification of faith through afflictions, ultimately resulting in praise and honor for God. The sermon concludes with a prayer for those who do not know Jesus to turn to Him.

Pastor Jason’s Introduction and Personal Anecdote

• Pastor Jason shares a personal anecdote about counting money during his primary school days, relating it to children counting their money during the holidays.
• He explains the significance of his Chinese name, Ching Yuan, which means “source of gold,” and how it influenced his desire to be seen as rich.
• Pastor Jason transitions to discussing Peter’s letter to people facing persecution, emphasizing that they are rich and blessed, not in financial terms but in spiritual riches.

Understanding the Blessings of New Birth

• Pastor Jason explains that Peter is telling Christians, the elect exiles, that they are super blessed, and he plans to dwell more on the blessings of the new birth.
• He mentions that the original Greek text of verses three to twelve should be read as one long sentence but will break it at verse nine for time constraints.
• Pastor Jason highlights the importance of understanding the concept of being born again, which describes someone who has been given new life by God.
• He praises God for His great mercy in causing believers to be born again, emphasizing that spiritual life is a gift from God, not something earned or achieved by men.

The Role of Foreknowledge and the Holy Spirit

• Pastor Jason explains that the Bible should be read in context, and the concept of being born again is linked to God’s foreknowledge.
• He defines foreknowledge as God’s eternal love set upon His elect, not His predictive ability.
• The Holy Spirit’s role in sanctification is discussed, including how the Spirit calls believers to God, helps them see their sin, and grants them grace to repent and believe.
• Pastor Jason emphasizes that the primary means of salvation is the power of the Holy Spirit, which causes believers to obey Jesus and be cleansed by His blood.

Living Hope and the Inheritance to Come

• Pastor Jason explains that being born again results in a living hope, a confident expectation of God’s promises based on the finished work of Jesus Christ.
• He contrasts biblical hope with wishful thinking, emphasizing that biblical hope is built on solid promises and not just wishful thinking.
• Peter encourages believers living in persecution by reminding them of their new life, which includes a confident expectation of an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading.
• Pastor Jason uses an analogy of a secure vault in Singapore to illustrate the security of believers’ inheritance in heaven.

Double Protection and Eternal Security

• Pastor Jason discusses the concept of being guarded through faith, which speaks of God’s active, protective watch over believers.
• He explains the doctrine of eternal security, stating that once a person is truly saved, they will not lose their salvation.
• The importance of faith in persevering to the end is emphasized, with the statement that the faith that fizzles at the finish was faulty from the first.
• Pastor Jason highlights that the faith that perseveres to the end is evidence of God’s power guarding believers through faith.

The Testing of Faith and Its Refinement

• Pastor Jason explains that believers are being tested to see if their faith is genuine, comparing it to the refining of gold.
• He describes the process of refining gold, which involves melting away impurities to produce the finest gold.
• The value of gold is discussed, with a mention of a good delivery gold bar worth nearly $2 million.
• Pastor Jason emphasizes that believers’ faith will be refined through affliction, producing precious faith that will result in praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

The Role of Faith in Enduring Sufferings

• Pastor Jason discusses the ability of believers to endure sufferings and rejoice, which is a result of their faith in the inheritance to come.
• He explains that believers may be grieved by trials but look forward to the future glory, which gives them strength and motivation to live holy lives.
• The analogy of the Japanese puffer fish is used to illustrate the miraculous power of the new creation to endure and rejoice.
• Pastor Jason emphasizes that God’s power guards believers through faith, and believers must be responsible to keep on believing.

The Future Prospect of Believers

• Pastor Jason explains that believers will be found worthy of praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
• He discusses the possibility that the praise and glory will be given to God, as He is the giver and sustainer of believers’ faith.
• The importance of believers bringing glory to God is emphasized, with the analogy of casting crowns at the feet of Jesus.
• Pastor Jason concludes by encouraging believers to keep their eyes on the shoreline, using the example of Florence Chadwick, who succeeded in her swim by keeping a mental image of the shoreline.

Conclusion and Prayer

• Pastor Jason summarizes the key points of the sermon, emphasizing the importance of faith, hope, and love in living holy lives in a hostile world.
• He reiterates that believers are blessed with a living hope that gives them strength and grace for every trial.
• Pastor Jason leads the congregation in a prayer, thanking God for the hope and new life given to believers and asking for grace to keep their eyes on the shoreline.
• He prays for those who do not know Jesus to realize God’s great mercy and turn from sin to believe in Him.
